Goree Island - 'The Door of No Return'
The House of Slaves on Goree Island was reconstructed and opened as a museum in 1962. Captured people from all over West Africa were held in the building in great numbers and from there transported directly to the Americas. More than a million slaves passed through the doors of the house and then through its 'Door of No Return' to board ships. Today, the island is a peaceful retreat for the city where you can walk quiet streets, see colonial architecture and have lunch. Lac Rose – Pink Lake
So named for its pink waters, the color is particularly visible during the dry season, November through May. The lake is also known for its high salt content of almost 40%, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily. The lake also has a salt collecting industry in which many salt collectors work 6–7 hours a day in the lake. Optional activities include a boat trip onto the lake and a camel ride or an ATV ride over the dunes. Morning pick-up from your lodging and return to lodging after tour. Joal/Fadiouth - Shell Island
Joal-Fadiouth straddles the Sahel Belt and the humid Casamance region. Located on an estuary, the area is seasonally flooded. Throughout the year, the estuary, which mixes salt and fresh water, is populated by mangroves and sprinkled with little isles of sea shells populated by baobabs, acacias and hermit crabs. The mangrove woods are populated by birds, including pelicans and flamingos, during their winter migration. Monkeys and hyenas are also found here. Touba (Day Trip or Overnight)
Founded in 1887 by Shaikh Aamadu Bàmba Mbàkke, Touba is the holy city of the Mourides, members of an Islamic Sufi sect. Life in Touba is dominated by Muslim practice and study. The city is also the site of an annual pilgrimage that attracts up to two million people. Being a sacred city for the Mourides, frivolous pursuits are banned. The city has special status in Senegal with the Mourides managing the city independently of the state. Visitors are most welcome in Touba. Saint-Louis, (Ndar in Wolof), was the capital of the French colony of Senegal from 1673 until 1902. From 1920 to 1957 it also served as the capital of the neighboring colony of Mauritania. Thanks to its distinctive appearance, numerous sites of attraction and its international music festivals and cultural exhibitions, Saint-Louis is a popular destination.
