Lac Rose – Pink Lake
So named for its pink waters, the color is particularly visible during the dry season, November through May. The lake is also known for its high salt content of almost 40%, which, like that of the Dead Sea, allows people to float easily. The lake also has a salt collecting industry in which many salt collectors work 6–7 hours a day in the lake. Joal/Fadiouth - Shell Island
Joal-Fadiouth straddles the Sahel Belt and the humid Casamance region. Located on an estuary, the area is seasonally flooded. Throughout the year, the estuary, which mixes salt and fresh water, is populated by mangroves and sprinkled with little isles of sea shells populated by baobabs, acacias and hermit crabs. The mangrove woods are populated by birds, including pelicans and flamingos, during their winter migration. Monkeys and hyenas are also found here.
